Ooh la la! It’s le Wilberforce Cafe!

Pupils in the Prep School’s Year 4 have been learning how to ask for items of food in French – and how to pay for them in Euros!  A natural progression was for them to do it ‘for real!’  Zut alors! An idea was born!

The children began by baking biscuits in cookery club, which included some of the children from Year 3, as well as producing ‘des biscuits croquants’ to offer in their French café the following day. The school was a hive of activity as ‘les petits chefs de cuisine’ rolled up their sleeves and prepared more food, with a running commentary – just like the popular TV cookery programmes!

On the menu were les sandwichs au fromage, au jambon et a la confiture….des biscuits, des bonbons, des pommes et des tomates. As the door of the café-snack opened to prospective parents at the Open Morning and the rest of the Prep School, eager customers were served only if they made their enquiry about food and asked how much it was – but in French! Many a plastic Euro exchanged hands and Year 4s were firm in their resolve to speak ‘seulement en francais.’

They did an excellent job and much fun was had by all!
